Local Action Project

Local Action Project

This summer TTA will continue its new program, Local Action Project (LAP), in conjunction with NYSUT.   LAP is a program to help local unions increase member participation, strengthen political action, expand community outreach and build coalitions, and improve communication.  By becoming more visible in the community, we will build community support to achieve our objectives such as passing the school budget and providing the best possible opportunities for our students.

NYSUT provides training and funding to us for three years to help get this effort started. This July we start our second year as a LAP local.  During July, our LAP team will be going to a four-day conference to receive training and continue our plan.  Our team is Kellee Bonenfant, Celine Casey, Seth Cohen, Rhonda Hermance, Barb Martenis, Mark Walsh, and Beth Wilson.

Our plan builds upon the community activities we already do, such as participating in Relay for Life and the Garden Bowl.  As we continue these, we will publicize TTA’s involvement so the community connects our good deeds with Troy teachers.   We are also working on new activities, such as having voter registration drives at Open Houses and Parent-Teacher Conference.

Our biggest goal is to increase member involvement in the many TTA activities that occur throughout the year.  We need both new and veteran teachers to find a few minutes or a few hours to help us at a community event, put information in teachers’ mailboxes, or attend a TTA social.  The Trumpet will be published monthly and will include a calendar of upcoming events. These are opportunities to connect with your colleagues, do a good deed, and have fun.

To volunteer to help at an event, please contact the Event Chair for that activity.  For more information about LAP or to suggest activities, please contact Beth Wilson, wilsonb on Troy’s e-mail or send interoffice mail to DMS.
